When the science and innovation engine roars, who leads the way forward?
When people reminisce about technological breakthroughs that have changed the world, the first things that come to mind must be China’s Four Great Inventions. The innovative spirit of Chinese people, daring to lead the world, has long been renowned worldwide. The innovative achievements left by our predecessors, which encapsulate the essence of human wisdom and culture, have not only promoted social progress but also injected tremendous momentum into the world.
Fast forward to the 21st century, and today we witness a global wave of innovation, with an ancient yet youthful China reinvigorated with vitality. Artificial intelligence, integrated circuits, 5G communications, biotechnology, smart manufacturing, and new energy applications. The birth of each new industry continues to narrate the story of China’s ingenuity, still rewriting the world’s landscape.
“China’s rural reform started in Xiaogang Village, while the reform in the field of science and technology began in Zhongguancun.” As an important cradle of scientific and technological innovation in New China, Zhongguancun has always led the trajectory of China’s scientific development with a spirit of selfless dedication and bold innovation.
Since the early days of New China, leading figures in Chinese science and education, such as the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Peking University, and Tsinghua University, established their bases in Zhongguancun, laying the foundation for it to become known as the “Science City” and “University City.” In 1952, some faculties from the arts and sciences departments of Tsinghua University and Yenching University were merged into Peking University, which relocated to the former Yenching University campus in Zhongguancun. Subsequently, the research building of the Institute of Modern Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences was completed in Zhongguancun, becoming a representative building of the Science City at that time. Esteemed scientists known for their significant contributions to China’s “Two Bombs, One Satellite” achievement, such as Qian Sanqiang, Wang Ganchang, Deng Jiaxian, and Yu Min, all worked in Zhongguancun. The area has historically been known by various names, such as Zhongguan’er, Zhongwan, and Zhongguancun. The official naming of “Zhongguancun” coincided with the establishment of the “Science City” by the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1953.
In 1978, the National Science Conference was convened, ushering in a spring of significant development in science and technology in China. This sparked a wave of enthusiasm among Zhongguancun’s intellectual community, who eagerly engaged in new attempts to drive economic development through the transformation of scientific and technological innovations. Inspired intellectuals from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Peking University, and Tsinghua University stepped out of their “ivory towers” to establish technology companies. Thus, tech enterprises like Jinghai, SITC, Sentec Group, KeHai, Lenovo, and others emerged like bamboo shoots after rain. After a decade of perseverance, there were 148 independent legal entity tech companies in this area, with new technology industries generating a value of 220 million yuan. Their technological achievements radiated across the country, and “China’s Silicon Valley” was officially established.
“As the sword’s edge comes from sharpening, and plum blossoms’ fragrance from the bitter cold.” Today’s Zhongguancun has firmly rooted itself here, with more than 22,000 high-tech enterprises including Lenovo, Baidu, JD.com, Xiaomi, Loongson Technology, SMIC, Qihoo 360, Didi, ByteDance, Sogou, SenseTime, Megvii, and Cambricon, along with 342 listed companies. Zhongguancun has become a strong support for the high-quality development of Beijing and even the entire country.
